The American actor Wood Harris is best known for his role as Avon Barksdale in the HBO crime drama series The Wire. He also has a long list of notable roles on film and TV, including cocaine dealer Ace in Paid in Full and high school football player Julius Campbell in Remember the Titans.
Born on 17 October 1969 in Chicago, Illinois, United States, Harris is a native of the city. His father was a bus driver, and his mother was a homemaker.
Harris attended Northern Illinois University, where he received a degree in theatre. He also worked in a number of stage productions.
His first acting job came in 1994, when he co-starred with Tupac Shakur in Above the Rim, a cult basketball drama that emphasized race relations and the power of friendship. The performance paved the way for more roles, and Harris was soon making an impact in the industry.
He has appeared in a number of popular movies, including As Good as It Gets, The Siege, Committed, Rhapsody, Dirty, Dough Boys and Ant-Man, as well as the Creed franchise. He has also narrated the ESPN 30 for 30 film Benji and is due to reprise his role as Avon Barksdale in The Wire’s second season.
He is married to Rebekah Harris, who has two children with him, and the pair live together in New York and California. They enjoy a healthy relationship and love spending time with their kids.
