Above Ground vs. Underground Water Tanks

April 19, 2023

Water storage is necessary for Australian homes due to the region's topography. Most of the country experiences little to no rainfall for months, leading to a need to conserve water, especially in homes.

One of the concerns, therefore, that arises is what kind of water tank one should install. Discover the differences and benefits of above-ground vs. underground water storage tanks.

What is rainwater harvesting?

We harvest water when we collect it to avoid runoff during rainfall, store it, and purify it for various uses. The common ways to collect rainwater are through the roof or from the ground as it flows away. Once the water is harvested, it goes into storage tanks for future domestic, commercial, or farming use.

Reasons to harvest and conserve water in a storage tank

Rainwater is one of the best sources of fresh water for drinking, household cleaning, and everyday use. In regions with constant water shortages, having a storage tank helps conserve this vital commodity.

Besides domestic use, people harvest water for commercial use to save on water bills. At the same time, farmers require water for their crops and animals. Water conservation in a storage tank guarantees a constant water supply, despite the weather conditions.

Differences between Above Ground and Underground Water Tanks

Although both tanks are used for the same purpose, they have three significant differences. These include:

On average, above ground tanks are cheaper than underground tanks. Besides the size and shipping costs, the price difference is due to the tedious installation process.

Installing an underground tank requires a professional, unlike above ground tanks, which can be a DIY job. The most crucial part of installing above ground tanks is finding the best spot for maximum water harvesting.

However, to install an underground tank, the ground has to be excavated and proper plumbing attached, which an expert should do.

Underground water storage tanks require less maintenance, unlike above ground water tanks. They are protected from harsh weather elements and will have less damage. However, the process of cleaning an underground tank is more challenging.

Benefits of Above Ground Water Storage Tanks

While price and installation costs may determine which tank to install, they each have different advantages. The advantages of above ground water tanks are:

  • You will spend less money to install an above ground water storage tank. There are no labour costs to dig the hole to place it, and the process takes less time.
  • If you move, shifting the above ground tank is easier as it is connected to fewer plumbing systems.

Benefits of Underground Water Storage Tanks

There are various advantages to owning an underground water tank. These include:

  • They are hidden from view, making them ideal if you are worried about the aesthetics of your yard. They also save space, especially for homes with small yards.
  • The water temperature will remain constant during summer or winter as the soil insulates the tank.
  • You can easily convert an underground water tank into a septic tank.

If your concern is pricing, installing an above ground water tank is the best option. However, an underground tank will last longer. The final decision ultimately depends on your needs, preference, and budget, so consult expert installers for a guided solution.
