Should You Buy a Salvage Car? Reasons to Avoid It

April 1, 2023

Most people have probably heard of salvage cars but may not know exactly what they are. A salvage car is a vehicle that has been damaged in some way, usually by being in a serious accident.

The damage to the car is so severe that it is not worth repairing, so the insurance company declares it a total loss. The car is then sold at auction to the highest bidder, who may be a salvage yard, a junk dealer, or even a private individual.

But how can you know if a car is salvaged or not? That’s where a car history check comes in. Along with information on the car’s title (salvage or junk), this report also holds other important information such as details of accidents, ownership history, etc.

When most people think of salvage cars, they think of a totaled car that is sitting in a junkyard. However, there are some salvage cars that are actually in good condition and can be driven. The question is, should you buy a salvage car?

There are a few reasons to avoid buying a salvage car:

Damaged by water

The effects of water damage to a car can be both cosmetic and mechanical. In terms of cosmetics, water damage can cause staining, warping, and other forms of visible damage to the interior and exterior of a car. Mechanically, water damage can cause rust and other forms of corrosion, which can lead to engine and other problems.

A salvage car has been in a major accident

Car accidents can have a number of different effects on cars. They can cause damage to the body of the car, the engine, the transmission, the suspension, and the tires.

Gutted by a fire

The effects of fire damage on cars can be significant. Fire can cause extensive damage to the exterior of a car, including the paint, windows, and tires. It can also cause damage to the interior of a car, including the upholstery, carpeting, and electronics. In some cases, fire can even cause the frame of a car to warp. All these destructions will cost you a pretty penny to just make the car look rideable. Even after that, you will need to make sure that it is safe to ride which will cost you even more.

A salvage car has been stolen

A stolen car often has its VIN changed which is a headache, to say the least. Since the VIN is modified, you will likely not be able to register the car in your name.

A salvage car has been used in a crime

A car that has been used in a crime might still have traces of evidence left in the car. You never know, so it is better to stay off such cars.

In conclusion, salvage cars are actually worth buying given that they meet the requirements. Under the perfect conditions, salvage cars may also be a great choice but there are definitely numerous things you should look out for before making any decision.
