How Long Can an AC Compressor Last?

May 21, 2023

AC compressor is an important part. The compressor’s useful life is infinite if serviced and worked on regularly. If your air conditioner’s compressor has been breaking up, it has to be serviced. A professional like should be recruited to perform routine checks on the compressor throughout the summer, when air conditioning use is at its peak, to help prevent any kind of problem.

Ac Compressor:

The air conditioner's compressor is the heart of the unit and plays a crucial role in the cooling process. Chemical refrigerants are introduced to the compressor as a cold gas and are then compressed at high pressure to generate heat.

After that, the hot gas is routed via condensing coils before being released to the atmosphere. Indoor comfort is achieved by reducing humidity through condensation.

Average Life Span of an A/C Compressor:

The compressor of an air conditioner will typically last as long as the system itself. You should not have to replace a dead compressor until after 8 to 10 years have passed. This, however, is conditional on a number of variables.

A/C compressors have varying lifespans that are affected by factors like how often they are used, how well they are maintained, and how professionally they were installed.

If properly maintained from reputable professional like a compressor can serve its owner for a decade or more. Some of them could possibly last for twenty years or more. However, the compressor’s lifespan will be drastically shortened if it is used excessively. The normal lifespan of your air conditioner, however, is affected by the following:

  1. Maintenance: At least once a year, you should have a professional service your air conditioner. Maintaining your air conditioner and furnace will help you see any problems with its parts, such as the compressor, and fix them before the entire system breaks down. However, if you have not kept up with regular maintenance, your air conditioner’s compressor could fail before its time.
  2. Effectiveness of Air Conditioning Compressor Use: Overuse of the air conditioner will shorten the life of the compressor. Too little use can shorten its lifespan as well. The compressor and pistons that move the refrigerant around can seize up if they are not used frequently.
  3. Leaking Refrigerant: It prevents the air conditioner from producing cold air. The refrigerant generally stays within the condenser unit, so there is no need to replace it. Help from an expert should be called out in the event of a refrigerant leak.
  4. Size Of The Unit: Your air conditioner will have to work harder to maintain a pleasant temperature in a room that is not suitable with the size of the unit. The compressor must work harder to produce cold air in a too small unit. A unit that is too large will cycle on and off frequently to avoid overcooling the area, which is inconvenient for the user and puts extra stress on the compressor.

How to Increase the Life of Your A/C Compressor?

Maintaining your HVAC system as a whole will save you from having to repair or replace your air conditioner's compressor. Maintaining your air conditioner extends its life and lowers your cooling bills every month.

Even though you should have a professional tune up your air conditioner once a year, you can do some of the maintenance yourself by following these steps:

  • AC Unit Inspection: You should not only inspect the compressor, but the entire air conditioning system, for damage or wear and tear. Maintenance on the refrigerant lines and insulation can prevent unnecessary wear on the system's compressor.
  • Clean the Drain Lines: Mold and mildew can form in your drain pipes if you do not regularly clear out the condensation water that forms in there. To eliminate obstructions, scrub with a firm brush, and if necessary, soak the area in a vinegar solution.
  • Clear The Area Around The Condenser Of Any Obstructions: Get rid of any bushes or other overgrown vegetation that may be obstructing airflow to your outdoor condenser. A garden hose can be used to wash away grime from the condenser's exterior. If you want your air conditioner's compressor to last as long as possible, you need to keep the condenser coils clean.
  • Switch Out The Filter: Your air conditioner's compressor may have to work harder than necessary if the air filter is dirty or blocked. To keep things breathing easily, you should swap out the filter once a month.

I believe in making the impossible possible because there’s no fun in giving up. Travel, design, fashion and current trends in the field of industrial construction are topics that I enjoy writing about.
