The Classic Home Alone Movie House

June 3, 2023

Home Alone is a classic Christmas movie that was released in 1990. The movie was created by John Hughes, who also is responsible for classic 80’s movies such as National Lampoon's Vacation, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, and my personal favorite, The Breakfast Club. Home Alone stars Macaulay Culkin as 8 year old Kevin McCallister. Being the youngest of five kids, Kevin is often picked on, which causes him to wish he had no family. It seems his wish comes true when he is accidentally left home alone while his whole family chaotically leaves to Paris for Christmas. At first Kevin revels in the freedom, that is until two burglars that go by the name "Wet Bandits" attempt to break into his home. The burglars are played brilliantly by actors Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, and throughout the movie hi-jinx ensues as Kevin works to protect his home from the thieves. The movie was the first in the Home Alone franchise, which consists of six movies.

The Home Alone house is a real house located in Winnetka, IL. The plan was to shoot all the interiors, as well as the exterior inside the home. However that turned out to be not as easy as expected, due to the size of the interior and the amount of crew. So while the exterior is this real home, the interior was actually shot inside a nearby gymnasium.

This home was built in 1921. It is a classic Georgian-style home that features four bedrooms and four bathrooms. It was last sold for $1.6 million in 2012, and is currently worth about $2.4 million. Although if I lived in the Home Alone house I wouldn't ever move.

Classic Christmas Home: The Exterior

For those of us who grew up in the 90's, one look at this home easily transports you back to your childhood. The home is made up of classic brick and stone steps leading up to the front door that sits under a white archway. There are so many windows on the front of the house that it makes for incredible light inside. Perfectly trimmed hedges, mature, tall oak trees, and a circular asphalt driveway complete the front exterior.

The numerous windows really do allow for a gorgeous glow of natural light inside the home. Here in the dining room you have hardwood floors, a candle chandelier, and a large bay window that houses so many plants that it really does create a peaceful space. You also have a large sliding glass door that opens up to the screened in patio.

It's hard to believe that there wasn't enough room inside this home to allow for filming. Up the wide, white staircase you come to the upstairs landing. Another large window, matching hardwood floors, and an understated hanging light fixture complete the space beautifully.

The living room also features hardwood floors, although they are mostly covered by oversized rugs of different styles and colors. The home features two fireplaces in total. One is located in the main bedroom, while the other is perfectly centered in this living room.
