The Iconic Goonies House

June 5, 2023

The Goonies is a 1985 adventure film directed by Richard Donne. The story was written by  Steven Spielberg, and stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, and Corey Feldman. The Goonies grossed $125 million worldwide, and has become a cult classic to this day. The story centers around a group of childhood friends, Mikey Walsh, Data, Mouth, and Chunk, who call themselves The Goonies. Their homes are about to be foreclosed on to make way for a Country Club, so having to move, the friends decide to spend a final weekend together. While going through their attic they come across what looks like a treasure map, leading to buried treasure somewhere in the neighborhood. In hopes to save their homes they embark on a literal treasure hunt, where much adventure and comedy ensues. The film reached audiences for childhood nostalgia, still to this day. Roger Ebert gave the film three out of four stars, and called the film "a smooth mixture of the usual ingredients from Steven Spielberg action movies, made special because of the high-energy performances of the kids who have the adventures.” The real Goonies house is still standing, and is located in Astoria, Oregon, where the events in the movie took place.

This iconic movie home was built back in 1896. It features three stories, including an unfinished basement. With three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and 2,336 sq ft, this classic Victorian has pristine views of the ocean from every level of the home. In early 2023, a 46 year old entrepreneur and self identified Goonie by the name of Behman Zakeri, purchased the home for $1.6 million. He currently lives in Kansas and just jumped at the chance to own his favorite childhood movie home when it became available. Because of the strict Oregon zoning laws for commercial enterprises in residential areas, his hopes of opening it up to the public may be on hold. However, he hopes to be able to rent out the property for all fellow Goonies. Cross your fingers you may just find it on Airbnb soon enough.

Where is the Goonies House?

Goonies House Address: 38th St, Astoria, OR 97103

Picture Perfect: The Exterior

This home is not only iconic, it's picturesque. All white with peach shutters, a visible attic window, wraparound porch, and multiple porch steps. It sits at the end of a gravel driveway with a white picket fence and tall trees and flowers.

The kitchen and dining room flow nicely together. The same hardwood floors flow throughout the home, however the small change from horizontal to vertical boards perfectly differentiates the two rooms, both remaining open.

The living room is open and airy. Massive windows allow for amazing ocean and neighborhood views, while the peach walls and crisp white ceiling makes for perfect tranquility. All the windows in this home are double panes with vinyl frames.

Imagine enjoying a morning cup of coffee on this deck? I can almost smell the crisp air. The peach floors and white railing matches the aesthetic of the home beautifully.
