Why Is My Shower Leaking? Signs, Possible Causes, and How to Fix Them

July 11, 2023

Are you noticing water seeping out of your shower, even when it’s turned off? This common problem can lead to water damage and high water bills if left unchecked. If a shower leak is not repaired, the continuous dripping or seeping water can accumulate over time, causing mould and mildew growth, pipe corrosion, and weakened floor and walls.

In addition, the damage caused by the leaks can be expensive to repair. As well, the constant dripping can be a source of irritation and inconvenience that can disrupt your daily routine until it is fixed.

Shower leaks can cause significant damage to the underlying structure, such as the flooring, walls, and ceilings, leading to much larger problems in the future, such as a flooded bathroom or property. Therefore, fixing shower leaks is crucial to prevent further damage, maintain efficiency, and save money in the long run.

Signs of a Leaking Shower

The most common signs of a leaking shower include the following:

  1. Loose tiles: One of the clear signs of a leaking shower is loose or detached tiles in and around the shower area. If water penetrates the grout between the tiles, it can cause water damage behind the tiles, causing them to loosen or fall off.
  2. Mould and mildew: A leaking shower can cause moisture accumulation in the bathroom space, promoting the growth of mould and mildew. You’ll know you have mould and mildew growth if you notice black, green, or white patches on your bathroom tiles, walls, or ceilings.
  3. Mouldy smell: Moisture and mould growth in the bathroom can cause a musty or mouldy odour that can be hard to ignore. If you smell a persistent odour in your bathroom, you may have a leaking shower even after cleaning it.
  4. Stains and discolouration: Water stains, discolouration, or bubbling paint on your bathroom walls or ceilings are water damage indicators. Look for any such marks on your bathroom walls or ceilings. These could be signs of a leaky shower that requires immediate attention.

Possible Causes of a Leaking Shower

There are several possible causes of a leaking shower, including:

  1. Sliced seal: The seal around the edges of the shower enclosure can become damaged or sliced, which can cause water to seep out. This can happen due to normal wear and tear or if the shower door is slammed or bumped too hard.
  2. Trouble with tile grout: If the grout between the tiles in the shower becomes cracked or damaged, water can seep through and cause leaks. This can happen if the grout was installed improperly or has deteriorated over time.
  3. Faulty faucet: A faulty faucet can also cause a leaking shower. If the faucet is not correctly installed, or if the parts inside the faucet wear out or become damaged, it can cause water to leak out of the showerhead or spout.
  4. Crumbling caulk: Caulk is often used to seal the gaps between the shower enclosure and the wall or between the tiles in the shower. If the caulk starts to crack, peel, or crumble, it can allow water to leak through and cause damage to the surrounding area. This can happen due to age, mould, or improper

installation.

How to Fix a Leaking Shower

The best way to fix a leaking shower depends on the cause of the leak. Here are some tips for fixing common causes of leaking showers:

Clogged or Faulty Showerhead

A limescale buildup can cause a leaking showerhead. When hard water constantly flows through your showerhead, these minerals can build up and create blockages in the showerhead’s tiny openings that can lead to reduced water pressure, irregular spray patterns, and even leakage.

To fix this issue, you can soak the showerhead overnight in equal parts water and vinegar to dissolve and remove the buildup. If the problem continues, replacing the showerhead is advised, or you may seek professional plumbing help.

Another potential cause of a faulty showerhead is a worn rubber washer: First, you’ll need to remove the showerhead from the shower arm using a wrench. Then, use a flathead screwdriver to remove the old washer from the showerhead’s base and replace

it with a new one similar in size and shape. Tighten the screws gently and use Teflon tape to prevent leaks.

Worn Shower Hose

Due to regular wear and tear, shower hoses may need to be replaced periodically. Welding can repair metal shower heads by fusing cracked or broken parts. Plumber’s tape can wrap around the repaired area to provide additional strength and prevent

leakage. If the damage is too severe, it is best to replace the showerhead altogether for safety reasons.

On the other hand, plastic showerheads cannot be repaired and must be replaced entirely. It is recommended to have shower hoses and heads inspected regularly and replaced as needed to ensure the proper functioning and avoid any potential water damage.

Shower Drain

If you have noticed that your shower drain is not working correctly, here are a few steps to fix the problem before calling a plumber:

  1. Dry the shower floor completely. This will allow you to see if there are any visible leaks or issues with the drain.
  2. Use a fan to speed up the drying process, or open the bathroom door to allow airflow.
  3. Once the floor is dry, you can pour water into the drain using a funnel. Watch the water as it drains and check for any leaks on the floor.
  4. If you notice that water is not draining correctly or if there are leaks on the floor, the drain is likely the problem. In this case, it’s best to call a plumber for help.

The Tap

If a bathroom leaks, it is likely due to a pipe, faucet, or drain. To fix a leaking faucet, tighten the screws and replace the tap heads if necessary. If tightening the faucet does not work, the problem is likely an internal pipe leak. Various factors, such as corrosion or a damaged pipe, can cause an internal pipe leak.

However, fixing the leak without the proper knowledge and tools can further damage the pipe and increase the risk of a more significant water leak. Therefore, contacting a professional plumbing company that can accurately diagnose and fix the problem is essential to ensure the leak is properly fixed and prevent future leaks.

Water Pressure Issues

Pressure in water supply pipes is necessary for smooth water flow. Thus, damage or incorrect installation of pipes can lead to leaks. Access to pipelines varies in different homes. If the leak is behind a tiled wall, then cutting a hole to access the pipe may be

necessary. If you do not have experience in this field, it is advised to seek professional help.

After repairing the leak:

  • Reconnect the pipe.
  • Turn on the water supply.
  • Test for correct water pressure.

To prevent future issues, ensure the proper installation of pipes and fixtures, avoid using corrosive liquids that can damage the pipes, and repair leaks as soon as they are discovered.

Protect Your Home From Shower Leaks

A leaking shower can cause damage to the bathroom and lead to further issues such as mould growth. Therefore, it is essential to identify the signs of a leaking shower and understand the possible causes, such as damaged grout or cracks in the shower pan.

Once the cause has been identified, you can take appropriate steps to fix the issue, such as regrouting or replacing the shower pan.

Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent shower leaks in the future. However, if the problem persists, you can seek professional plumbing help. With the proper knowledge and tools, homeowners can quickly identify and repair a leaking shower, preventing further damage and inconvenience.
