You may have been toying with the idea of upgrading your home or upsizing for several months now, maybe even several years, how do you know you're really ready to take on a different house? While nobody really loves the thought of moving, sometimes the idea of more space is really what will prompt you to make the move. As an agent, I've seen a lot of different families and experience a lot of different situations so if you're considering moving or upgrading your home your five signs to know that you're ready for that move.
5 Signs You're Ready to Upgrade Your Home
#1. You've expanded your family.
When you first moved in, a two-bedroom home seemed appropriate, but now, you've added two or three more kids to the family and it's just too small. Even with the addition of one new family member or your first child, having a two-bedroom home might just be too small.
#2. You need more storage.
If you have found yourself driving by storage facilities or checking on storage rates, it may be time to find more storage at home. Perhaps you need a third car garage, storage in the back, or just more rooms in the house.
#3. Your income has increased.
Perhaps you've gotten a raise or a different job increasing your income and now you think you can take on a higher mortgage payment. This is not necessarily a reason to buy a bigger house, but you might find a house in a better neighborhood, with more amenities, or just more luxurious features and finishes.
#4. You want additional rooms.
If you're living room has also become the playroom, entertainment space, living room, and your home office, it may be time to upgrade. This might be the perfect time to look for a home with extra office space, additional bedrooms, or perhaps a separate living space altogether for the self-employed. Perhaps you run a consulting business or any business that needs a separate entrance. This is the time to look for that new home.
#5. Your lifestyle has changed.
Perhaps you've got married, want to entertain more, or are thinking of adding to the family, adopting, or taking on an aging parent. You might need additional bedrooms and living space based on your lifestyle. Are you finding it cramped to live too close to each other? Are you fighting for the one or two bathrooms you have? If you find that your stumbling over each other and just don't have the space to breathe, it may be time to upgrade the house.
Upgrading your home is a great time to reflect, reorganize and reevaluate where you are and where you want to go and be in the next 5 years. It may be a good time to either upgrade or even downsize but take stock and see where you’d like to be and contact your real estate agent to find out more in your area.
