5 Ways to Get The Luxury Look For Less

August 11, 2023

Unless you’re in a temporary living situation or you’re looking for ways to throw away money, it’s fair to say most of us are looking to achieve a luxurious look in our home for less money. In difficult times of inflation and high costs of living, we need to figure out our priorities and seek out ways to be shrewd.

1. Focusing on Flooring

Flooring plays a crucial role in setting the tone for your entire home; a bit like shoes being so important when dressing for an event. Whilst furniture and fixtures can be important, flooring takes a priority in many situations - particularly when it outlives many other aspects of the room. If your budget allows, consider upgrading your existing floors to high-quality but affordable options like Cosentino’s Silestone bathroom flooring, or the Dekton range. These materials have an upscale look and provide durability that can withstand heavy traffic and spills.

Silestone’s non-porous nature and resistance to stains makes it a good choice because it can save money in the long. Alternatively, Dekton is a great choice for its high UV resistance, making it perfect for rooms that receive a lot of natural light. Ultimately, if you’re going to pick and choose where to focus cash, flooring is an overlooked place to start.

2. Thrift Shopping and DIY Projects

Next, you’re likely going to be thinking of ways to upgrade your fixtures and furniture. But, what many don’t realise is that luxury doesn't have to be brand new. Antique shops, thrift stores, and flea markets can yield treasures that offer a touch of sophistication.

Older furniture often boasts better quality and craftsmanship compared to new, mass-produced items - particularly when spruced up. A fresh coat of paint or reupholstering a found piece can also create a unique focal point for your room.

3. Choose a High-End Colour Palette

The colours you choose can significantly impact the luxury aesthetic. Stick to neutrals like white, cream, and gray for a timeless, elegant look. Adding hints of gold or silver can also bring an elevated feel. You can incorporate these hues through paint, furniture, and accessories, though you may let your flooring and stumbled-upon furniture bargains dictate which palette you opt for.

4. Lighting is Key

Lighting can make or break a room’s ambiance - what good is an expensive rug if it’s hidden away in the dark? Chandeliers, for instance, are no longer exclusive to dining rooms and entryways. A small, tasteful chandelier can elevate a bedroom or even a spacious bathroom.

Wall sconces can also add a touch of elegance, and pointing light upwards or downwards can draw our attention in different ways and evoke varying emotions.

For example, lamps low to the floor can be ideal in lounging rooms where you’re looking to relax; whilst high up lighting can make a room feel grand, big, and luxurious.

Remember, good lighting isn’t just about fixtures. It’s also about natural light. Letting in more natural light during the day can make your home feel more open and luxurious.

5. Invest in Quality, Not Quantity

While it's tempting to fill every space, a less-is-more approach often exudes luxury. Rather than buying many low-cost items, save up for a few high-quality pieces that will stand the test of time. This strategy applies to furniture, artwork, and even kitchenware. Plus, you won’t fall victim to a false economy, meaning you save money in the long run because you don’t have to keep rebuying poor quality items.

In conclusion, achieving a luxury look for less is about smart choices and creativity. By focusing on quality over quantity (even if it means going second hand), paying attention to details like flooring and lighting, and using colour effectively can create a luxurious space without a large budget.
