The oscar-winning actress, singer, and dancer is best known for her role as Nell Harper on the TV series Gimme a Break! She is also known for her performances in the Broadway musicals Ain’t Misbehavin’ and a number of other movies and television shows, including Ryan's Hope, The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo, You Take the Kids, and Back Roads. Her career spanned over a period of 40 years, earning her a massive amount of money that helped her reach the level of net worth she achieved prior to her death in 2003.
Nell Carter was born in Birmingham, Alabama USA in 1948. She began her singing career as a member of her church choir which eventually led to her performing on a local gospel radio show. She would later perform with a jazz band called the Renaissance Ensemble, which regularly played around Birmingham, changing her last name to Carter for unspecified reasons. She moved to New York City with the band at age 19 where she sang in various niteries and cafes before landing her big break on Broadway.
Her performance in Ain’t Misbehavin’ earned her a Tony Award, while her television reprisal of the role brought her an Emmy Award. She also starred in a few movies and television shows, including Hair, The Proprietor, Perfect Fit, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, The Grass Harp, and a host of others. She passed away on January 23, 2003 at the age of 54 from heart disease complicated by diabetes at her Beverly Hills home.
