He even co-wrote and starred in Waters’ Western spoof Polyester and the sexy exploitation film Lust in the Dust.
Despite his success in the entertainment industry, he had a troubled personal life. He was gay and kept it a secret from the public for most of his life. He came out as gay in 2005 and published his autobiography, which was a huge hit. He died on July 8, 2018 at the age of 86 from cardiac arrest.
