The series was filmed in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. In particular, the diner from episode five was filmed at The Roadside Cafe at CL Western Town and Backlot in Bragg Creek, while the train station was filmed at the same location that was used for a few episodes of Tin Star. The train itself was a real-life railcar, sourced from the Canadian Railway Museum in Montreal.

In the fictional world of Control Z, a hacker exposes a student’s transgender status at an assembly and sets off a chain reaction that causes students to turn on one another. Sofia, a socially isolated but observant teenager, tries to uncover the hacker’s identity as more secrets are revealed.

Like its predecessors Casa de las Flores and Luis Miguel: La Serie, the show takes place among Mexico’s upper class — chilangos who are obsessed with designer logos and see access to the United States as the universal mark of success. But Control Z also points to the limits of that worldview. Several characters import on-trend social causes while text messages and Instagrams reveal their personal dramas in a Gossip Girl meets Gen Z milieu.

Actors started sharing photos from the set of the CGI-heavy show on Instagram, with Aaron Glenane revealing that he had just wrapped up filming for the second season at Martini Studios in Langley, British Columbia. The studio features eight stages and is a favorite location for many Netflix shows that require post-apocalyptic sets.
