There are few movies more iconic than the 1985 cult classic “The Goonies.” It introduced a generation of kids to Baby Ruth candy bars, the Truffle Shuffle, and pirate ships, and it’s no wonder that the film has gone on to inspire so many future adventurers. The Goonies starts with a jailbreak scene that takes place at the historic Clatsop County Jail, located on Duane Street in downtown Astoria. Today the building is home to the Oregon Film Museum, which celebrates all of the state’s great film productions. It’s a wonderful place to spend an afternoon, and you can see some of the same landmarks that appeared in the movie including the Jeep used in the escape and the jail cell that was occupied by Jake Fratelli.

From there, the Goonies head out of town to explore a few of their favorite filming locations. One of the first places they visit is Ecola State Park, which is located about three miles north of Cannon Beach. This location was used to represent the Goonies’ hideout, and you can still see a lot of the same scenery that was featured in the film. For example, the abandoned restaurant where the Goonies found the treasure map is still standing, and it looks exactly the same as it did in the movie.
