Where is Hocus Pocus Filmed?

August 26, 2023

If you're a fan of Hocus Pocus, then it's not too late to take part in the official guided tour experience, which takes place on weekends in October. It's an opportunity to go back in time and visit all of the places where the film was filmed 29 years ago.

The movie revolves around the Sanderson sisters - played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy – who were inadvertently resurrected in 17th century Salem three centuries after their semi-gruesome deaths. The film follows the trio of witches as they attempt to capture a real life devil for their master, the immortal Count Olaf (portrayed by David Kirschner).

While the majority of scenes in Hocus Pocus were filmed on various sound stages at Walt Disney Studios in California, there are a few key locations that you can visit when you're in Rhode Island. The opening scene, which shows Thackery Binx searching for his sister Emily after the Sanderson sisters infamously turned her into a black cat, was filmed at Pioneer Village in Forest River Park. The village is known as America's first living history museum, and it aims to transport you back to the 17th century with dugouts, wigwams and thatched roof cottages.

Another important location to look out for is Old Burial Hill in Marblehead, MA. The daytime cemetery scenes in the film were filmed at this spot, and you'll also see it in one of the deleted scenes when Max loses his shoes to bullies. This area is packed with colonial-style houses, and if you walk down Ocean Avenue, you'll see the pretty white house that was used for Dani's house. However, it's important to remember that the house is a private residence, so be sure to respect the owners if you decide to snap some photos.
