The shady shrimp boats seen in several establishing shots of the show were actually filmed at Shem Creek, which runs through the heart of downtown Charleston. This popular waterway is also home to many of the restaurants featured in the show, including Pope's and Kiara's parents' eateries. The dock JJ boats under when he tries to reunite with Sarah in Season 1 was filmed at the Pitt Street Bridge, as is the one John B and Big John use when driving from Sullivan's Island to Kildare in Season 3.
While there is no real Kildare County in North Carolina, the wealthy neighborhood of Figure Eight does exist. The affluent island is located off Northern New Hanover County and features a number of eye-catching million-dollar-plus homes. Many of the scenes filmed at the beach house in Figure 8 were actually filmed at a local middle school, while the lavish Kooks' Midsummers soiree was filmed at the Island Club, a luxury golf resort on Kiawah Island.
The clifftop mansion used as the Cameron family's estate in all three seasons of Outer Banks is actually Lowndes Grove, an event venue located in Mount Pleasant. The house was transformed for the show by extensive landscaping and the addition of furniture, which gives it a very different appearance from the actual property.
