GLENS FALLS -- On Sunday, Animal Planet's 2023 Puppy Bowl will air on its regular channel and also on Discovery Channel, TBS and HBO Max. It will feature 122 puppies from 67 shelters and rescues playing for Team Ruff or Team Fluff in an arena made to resemble a football field. The three-hour event will be simulcast on all those channels and online, too. It will include the Puppy Bowl pre-game show at 1 p.m. ET, followed by the main event at 2 p.m. ET, with a special at halftime featuring the Arm & Hammer Slide Kitty Halftime show and Puppy Bowl referee Dan Schachner returning for his 12th year of calling puppy penalties and touchdowns. Commentators Steve Levy and Taylor Rooks will once again provide play-by-play.
For many viewers, the most exciting part of the Puppy Bowl is figuring out which of the adorable canines on either team will win the Wayfair Lombarky trophy. The game features a wide variety of cameras to showcase the action, including fan favorites like the water-bowl cam and the slo-mo cam. It will be a big game this year, with more players from more shelters and rescues than ever before.
This year's Puppy Bowl stars hail from New York City's Green Dogs Unleashed, New York City's Rescued Dogs Rock and Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region in Colorado Springs, CO. During a 2015 Reddit AMA, Schachner revealed that when a viewer asks about a specific pup they saw on TV, Animal Planet connects them with the shelter or rescue organization where the pet is housed. Often, the dogs are already adopted by the time the show airs.
