One of the main locations for the series is the imposing LUMON Industries building in Holmdel, New Jersey. This building is the former headquarters of Bell Labs and was purchased in 2013 after it was shut down. It has since been renovated and reopened as Bell Works. Stiller, Hindle, and the writers of Severance were drawn to this location because it matched the aesthetic of the fictional company in their series.
Other major filming locations for the series include Beacon, NY, Nyack, NY, and Kingston, NY. The scenes in the first episode where Mark calls in sick to meet with Petey were filmed at the Hall of Records in Beacon (Dutchess County). To get there, Mark drives under the Rondout Train Trestle (also known as the Kingston Trestle), a CSX railroad bridge over the Rondout Creek built in 1903. Atlas of Wonders has also identified the diner that serves as the Pip’s Bar and Grille in the second episode when Mark meets up with Petey. This diner is called Phoenicia Diner and is located in Ulster County, NY.
