Despite being set in the future, where is station 11 filmed gives off a post-apocalyptic vibe. The sci-fi miniseries, based on the 2014 novel by Emily St. John Mandel, was filmed in a variety of locations in both the United States and Canada. From crowded cities to desolate open land, the production has a diverse landscape that helps create a surreal atmosphere for the series.
Toronto played host to some of the series’ outdoor scenes. The town’s Sheridan Park, Hyde Park and South Shore areas all appeared on screen. The series also filmed in Oshawa, Ontario. The city is situated on the shores of Lake Ontario and boasts some beautiful natural scenery.
Filming of the show began back in January before being rudely interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sheridan Park and the nearby neighborhood of Sheridan Gardens were used as backdrops for many key scenes. Other notable spots include a vintage curling rink and a railway station.
Other Canadian cities also got in on the action. Calgary was used as a location for several scenes. The airport that plays home to Arthur and Elizabeth’s family was actually Severn City Airport. The plane that lands on the tarmac in the first episode of the series was actually a CGI-created scene. The flooded hotel was filmed at the Pho Anh Huyen Vietnamese Noodle House in Crescent Heights and the mycology lab was shot at SAIT’s Senator Burns Building in downtown Calgary.
The final scenes in the series are a bit more exotic. The lone Kirsten and Alex meet up with the Travelling Symphony, a group of nomadic actors and musicians who perform William Shakespeare plays on a defined tour path. The location where the pair say their goodbyes is actually Terra Cotta Conservation Area in Halton Hills.
