If you haven't started watching Outer Range yet, you're missing out on a mind-bending sci-fi western that has audiences hooked. Starring Josh Brolin as rancher Royal Abbott, the show explores a supernatural southwestern mystery while taking on social issues like land ownership and prejudice. But what makes the series truly stand out are the locations and expansive scenery that play an equally important role in the story.

The acclaimed Netflix show, which was produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment and distributed through Amazon Studios, was filmed primarily in the state of New Mexico. This included shots of the fictional town of Amelia County, which is home to the Abbott family's ranch. The small-town sets also featured a number of local businesses, including the Community 1st Bank and the diner where Rhett and Maria argue in the first episode.

A native of New Mexico, the show's location manager Cyndy McCrossen gave us a behind-the-scenes look at where Outer Range was filmed. The majority of the show was shot in Albuquerque and Sante Fe, but other scenes were filmed in New Mexico's tiny railroad town of Lamy. Some scenes were also filmed in sunny Los Angeles, California.

The first season of Outer Range came to a dramatic close in the final episode, which saw Royal admitting his complicated past and revealing that the strange hole in the farm's west pasture is actually a portal to the future. However, plenty of questions remain unanswered, especially since the season finale leaves viewers to wonder whether Joy is really traveling back in time or just seeing a vision of the past through the black dust.
