The sequel to the hit History series Vikings, titled Vikings: Valhalla, has finally landed on Netflix. This new installment is set a century after the events of Vikings and follows the beginning of the end of the Viking Age. It also explores the tension between the descendants of the Vikings (Norse or “Danes”) and the native English.
The show is filmed in Ireland, where the scenery is perfect for depicting medieval Scandinavia. The rugged landscapes of County Wicklow provide a convincing stand-in for the landscape of early Viking times. The area is home to many lakes, forests, and cliffs with beautiful views. In addition, the cosmopolitan city of Dublin is used for scenes that require a large settlement.
While the main cast of Vikings: Valhalla is made up of mostly Irish actors, such as Sam Corlett, Hayat Kamille, Frida Gustavsson, Leo Suter, Caroline Henderson, David Oakes, and Johannes Haukur Johannesson, several other well-known names are also part of the show. For example, the role of King Canute was portrayed by actor Bradley Freegard.
Some of the most stunning shots in the series are captured at locations such as Avoca Mines, Blessington Lakes, Pulaphuca Reservoir, and Powerscourt Waterfall. The latter is one of the highest waterfalls in Ireland and has a drop of close to 400 feet. Additionally, a number of sea shots were shot on the Wicklow Coast. This includes Nuns Beach which features a horseshoe-shaped beach covered by rocks and an ancient convent.
