Austin vs. Dallas: What’s Texas’ Best Region To Live?

September 14, 2023

Dallas and Austin remain two popular cities in Texas. People want to live in either of these cities for a variety of reasons. When the time comes to choose where to buy, what should a person consider?

Job Opportunities

The tech market is booming in both Austin and Dallas. Austin currently offers better employment opportunities, which is why many people choose to look at new houses austin. However, Dallas isn't slacking in this area, as over 1,000 corporations call this city home.

Housing Considerations

Many people assume houses in Dallas will cost more, as the city is so much bigger than Austin. That's not the case. Homes in Dallas tend to be more affordable than those in Austin. The median home cost in Austin is slightly higher than the median home cost in Dallas. However, Austin has newer homes. Rent is slightly cheaper in Austin for those who prefer to live in apartments.

Cost of Living

Living in Austin costs more than living in Dallas. Dallas is a fairly inexpensive city to live in, but that is not the case with Austin. A person will find they spend 28.1 percent more to live in Austin than if they move north to Dallas.

Crime Rate

The crime rate in Austin concerns many. Austin's murder rate has risen in recent years. However, the same can be said of Dallas, which ranks seventh on the list of cities with a homicide problem, according to Violent crime is more of a concern in Dallas, while property crime is a bigger problem in Austin.

Transportation Options

Most people prefer to drive in Dallas and Austin rather than relying on public transportation. Both cities, however, have horrible commute times. Fortunately, those who want to use public transportation will find they have options in these cities. Dallas offers the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) System, while Austin's public transportation system is known as CapMetro. Austin is the smallest of the two cities, which means the public transportation system isn't as extensive.

Sports Teams

The Dallas Cowboys have often been referred to as America's Team. However, this team is only one of several professional teams that call Dallas home. The Texas Rangers are based in the city, along with the Dallas Mavericks and FC Dallas.

Austin, in contrast, is more of a college team town. People come to the city to see the University of Texas football team in action. However, they may also take in a professional sporting event courtesy of the Round Rock Express or Austin FC.

Educational Opportunities

When it comes to educational opportunities, Dallas comes out ahead. Three high schools on the U.S. News list of top high schools in the state are located in Dallas. Only one high school in Austin made this list. In addition, Dallas has far more higher education institutions in the city, as 37 colleges and universities call it home. Austin, in contrast, only has 15 higher education institutions.

Dallas is typically the better option for those who want value for their investment. Austin offers an easier commute, however. Consider all elements of each city to find the right choice for your needs, as no two people are alike. One person might wish to call Dallas home while another wouldn't live anywhere other than Austin. Either city would be happy to have new residents, so it all comes down to personal choice.
