When John Wayne passed away in June of 1979, he had amassed a significant fortune. He had worked hard during his acting career to build up this wealth, but he also invested in film production and other ventures that contributed to his overall earnings.
He began his career in Hollywood in the late 1920s working as a warehouseman, driver and dummy for Fox Film Corporation, but he gained his big break in 1939 with the release of Stagecoach. This film made him a huge star and helped to catapult his acting career into the mainstream.
Throughout his career, he starred in over 170 movies and was primarily typecast in Western films. He earned a number of awards and accolades, including two Presidential Medals of Freedom. He also received a Congressional Gold Medal and was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
By the time he died, his estate was worth approximately $7 million. This included a million dollars in real estate and $6 million in personal assets and investments. He was also earning around $100,000 per year in passive income from royalties and investments.
When it came to his will, he was very careful with who he left his money to. He ensured that all of his children would receive some amount of compensation, ensuring that they could continue their careers and lives with financial stability. He also left tens of thousands to his former and current secretaries. However, he did not leave any of his money to his third wife, Pilar Pallete, as they had a separation agreement.
