'American Idol' is back with Season 20 and judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie are all returning along with host Ryan Seacrest. This season the show is being filmed in several different locations including Las Vegas, New Orleans and Austin as well as Disney Aulani in Hawaii. The show is expected to start airing this Sunday, March 6.
Last year the show filmed in various locations across California. It also aired in Nashville, where contestants often call home or a "home away from home." Winner Noah Thompson and runner-up HunterGirl both live there, while third-place finisher Leah Marlene makes it her permanent residence. Depending on how many singers impress Richie, Perry and Bryan enough to get a golden ticket, approximately 64 people advance to Hollywood Week.
That's where things really get intense, and where the show focuses on the performances that will be televised to millions of viewers. It's also where the top 24 will be selected to move on to the Live shows.
The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, is the creator and star of the show, so it's no surprise that the production team is based in Los Angeles, California. The Weeknd's massive Bel Air mansion is used for the show's exterior shots, and the set has a pool, home cinema, recording studio, and gym. In addition to the lavish interiors, The Weeknd's infamous penthouse has been used for a number of Idol scenes.
