Netflix’s second original African series, 'Blood & Water', started filming around June of 2019 and is directed by one of South Africa's most recognisable black female directors Nosipho Dumisa. Taking place at an exclusive school for wealthy students, the show has the usual teenage melodramas with a mystery at the center of it all and lots of text messaging between characters.
While the show does evoke feelings of familiarity with other global teen dramas like On My Block and 13 Reasons Why, it manages to differentiate itself from them by being set in a rich coastal setting amongst South African wealth. And it stars a host of young, talented local actors.
The story revolves around Puleng Khumalo, the intelligent but spontaneous 16-year-old daughter of a wealthy family, who investigates her abducted at birth older sister's cold case. Along the way she meets a beautiful student from another private school, Fikile 'Fiks' Bhele, who many are quick to point out looks a lot like her. The two quickly get caught up in parties, threesomes and unlimited alcohol and drugs as they try to navigate high school life, difficult parents and school sports.
The show has already been renewed for a second season and stars Ama Qamata (Puleng), Khosi Ngema (Fikile), Natasha Thahane, Gail Mabalane, Cindy Mahlangu and Thabang Molaba (Karabo 'KB' Molapo). Filming wrapped in Cape Town earlier this year and the second season will premiere across 190 countries on Netflix later this year.
