The popular crime drama series filmed in Yorkshire ran from 2010 to 2016. It's based on the Peter Robinson novels and stars Stephen Tompkinson as DCI Banks. ITV has confirmed a sixth series of the show. Filming is due to start in 2019 and will run for six episodes.
ITV has already filmed some of the series in locations across Yorkshire including the town of Huddersfield, the Yorkshire Dales, and Ilkley Moor. Creative England has supported a number of high quality TV productions to use our district as locations in recent years, such as BBC period drama Last Tango in Halifax and ITV's crime series DCI Banks.
DCI Banks is a highly credible, believable and well-acted detective drama that focuses on the personal stories of its main characters and their work environment. The show is a forensically-driven thriller that also explores family dynamics, professional ethics and the human cost of criminal justice.
Robinson himself has said that he draws inspiration from Georges Simenon's Maigret books and Raymond Chandler's pacey Philip Marlowe. However, he adds that he never wants to do a pastiche. The series features a strong team of women including Winsome, the moralist, and Annie Cabbot, the sardonic pragmatist.
The music on the show is varied but keeps country and folk music at bay. Banks whistles Carmen and there's a sub-plot involving his son's indy band (which features their name as 'Dancing Pigs'). A Bob Dylan album is used as the background music for one of the investigations and he gets a mention in another episode.
