With its endless salt flats, soaring mountains and sprawling deserts, the Western Australian outback is one of the most breathtaking settings for TV and film. Mystery Road producer Greer Simpkin is well acquainted with the area’s unique terrain, having filmed two films and a series in the region before helming the first two seasons of the crime drama. It’s helped her to craft a world where the town of Gideon feels like a place on the edge of existence, where ancient artefacts and long-simmering tensions are roiling beneath a sunburnt surface.
Starring Aaron Pedersen as Detective Jay Swan, the show has become a cultural phenomenon, with the laconic smalltown cop becoming something of an icon for its exploration of Aboriginal Australia and its relationships with white society. The series, which also stars Kodie Bedford and Sofia Helin, has been praised for its outstanding acting, directing and scripting, with a particular focus on the way that Swan’s relationship with his father plays out.
The series was filmed around the Kalgoorlie-Boulder region, including the town of Kalgoorlie and its suburbs and the ghost town of Coolgardie. The locations helped to capture the feel of the wild, lawless outback of the late ’90s perfectly and allowed the raw emotions of the characters to come through clearly on screen. In fact, one of the most memorable moments in the premiere episode was the shot of a Falcon tearing across a dead-straight dirt road that stretches out into the distance on both sides with nothing but vast, red salt flats.
