A leaky roof or a crack in the foundation may not be deal breakers for potential home buyers, but poltergeists and portals to hell in the cellar certainly would be. That is the world that realtor Luke Roman and his elite team of specialists work in on Syfy’s funny and frightening new series Surreal Estate.
Starring Schitt’s Creek and Wynonna Earp alum Tim Rozon as real estate agent Luke Roman, the show follows him and his agency, the Roman Agency, which specializes in selling haunted houses. The 10-episode first season was shot primarily in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. International broadcasters are also all in for the supernatural drama, with German media company Leonine Studios confirming deals in 160 territories.
In each episode, the Roman Agency takes on a case that cannot be solved using traditional real estate strategies. Each property explores an overarching theme, such as family, loneliness or revenge. As part of their research, the agents communicate with the ghosts in the house and negotiate with them to make a sale happen.
Although some viewers might find the supernatural elements a little too much to handle, Rozon and his co-stars have created an entertaining and engaging series that is sure to please horror fans. The show has a lot of heart, too, which comes through in each episode. It is clear that the cast loves working together and this really shows onscreen. The cast also includes Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek) as telekinetic realtor Susan Ireland, Maurice Dean Wint (Haven) as proprietary tech guru August Ripley, Adam Korson (This Is Us) as lapsed Catholic priest Father Phil Orley and Savannah Basley (Wynonna Earp) as Zoey L’Enfant.
