For the 17th year, Animal Planet is airing the Puppy Bowl on Super Bowl Sunday. The three-hour adorable pregame show features dozens of puppies from shelters and rescue organizations. The pups — divided into Team Ruff and Team Fluff — play and fumble around a puppy-sized football field, while commentators talk about the breeds and personalities of each one. Fans can also follow the action via slow-motion replays, a special water-bowl cam and aerial shots from the brand-new Temptation Sky Box.

The pups — who are all available for adoption — have been gathered from shelters and rescue groups across the country. Many of them have special needs, such as a deformity or congenital disease. The show’s producers hope the Puppy Bowl will help them find new homes. “It’s all about finding a family for the dogs that are in need,” says Mary Ann Larson, an Animal Planet spokesperson.

While the game is aired on Super Bowl Sunday, most of the puppies featured in the Puppy Bowl are up for adoption all year round. And you can even adopt a puppy online.

For this year’s show, which was filmed at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls last fall, the local sports venue brought in 70 pups from shelters and rescues throughout the Northeast. The critters got plenty of room to run and romp, thanks to the large arena and socially distanced setting, according to Heinz.
