Where is Unforgiven Filmed?

If you ask most western lovers what classic movie represents the genre at its best, you're likely to get a lot of answers that mention Unforgiven. Directed and starring Clint Eastwood, the 1992 film won four Oscars and continues to be a touchstone for fans of the genre to this day. Unforgiven is a revisionist Western that tackles the mythology and pathology of violence in brutally honest fashion.

The movie follows William Munny, a once-famous gunslinger who has retired to become a hog farmer and father to two children. When he hears of a $1,000 bounty on the heads of two cowboys who mutilated and disfigured a prostitute, Munny agrees to take up the task once again, if only to make money for his family.

While screenwriter David Webb Peoples had already written such films as 1982's Blade Runner and Terry Gilliam's 1995 sci-fi mind-twister 12 Monkeys, when he wrote the script for Unforgiven in 1976 he wasn't a professional writer. Nonetheless, he set out to accomplish a few goals with the film.

The filming of Unforgiven took place in a variety of locations, but the majority of it was shot in Alberta, Canada. The set for the town of Big Whiskey was built at the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site, located about 60 miles south of Calgary. Other scenes were filmed in Drumheller, Longview, Brooks and High River. The train scene, however, was filmed along the Sierra Railroad in California's Tuolumne County.
