When a lively young family moves in next door to gruff widower Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks), his attempts at suicide are interrupted by their kindness. After befriending his neighbors Marisol (Mariana Trevino), Tommy (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and their daughters Abby and Luna, Otto’s gruff exterior begins to crack as he tries to do the right thing.
While he still struggles with his wife Sonya’s death, Otto tries to help his new friends and neighbors with his knowledge of home improvement. He assists Marisol with her radiators, helps a jogger named Jimmy with his back problems, and even confronts a transgender delivery boy whom he supported as a student. He also takes in his elderly neighbor Anita, and gives a gift to a non-responsive stroke victim who owes him a quarter.
Filming for the comedy-drama was largely filmed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Toledo, Ohio. The movie’s production company, Gracie Films, rented Stangl’s Bakery in Ambridge and Busy Beaver of Lawrenceville for some scenes. Other locations include the Toledo Central Union Terminal, Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Brecksville Station Cuyahoga Scenic Railroad. Scenes were also shot at a restaurant called the Imagination Station in Toledo, and Simpson Reinforcing in Arnold.
Hanks was spotted multiple times around Pittsburgh during filming, including photobombing a bridal shower at the Fairmont Hotel in March 2022. He was also spotted at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Oakmont, and at Simpson Reinforcing in Arnold. The movie was released on December 25, 2022, by Sony Pictures.
