Aaron Burr was an American politician. He was born on February 6, 1756 in Newark, NJ, and when he was 19 years old he moved to Connecticut and began studying law. In 1775 he took a break from his studies and joined the Continental Army. In 1778 Burr met Theodosia Bartow Prevost who at the time was married to Jacques Marcus Prevost, an officer in the Royal American Regiment. Theodora was ten years older than Burr, and by 1780 the two were having an open affair in Jacques’ absence. In 1781 he died of yellow fever, and the following year Burr and Theodora were married. In 1794 Theodora passed away from stomach cancer. After the war, Burr joined the New York State Assembly, and unsuccessfully ran for President in 1796. In 1801 he became Vice President under Thomas Jefferson, despite Jefferson never fully trusting him. In 1804 Jefferson decided to drop Burr from his next run, so Burr decided to run for Governor of New York, and lost. This loss was a huge hit to his ego, and he blamed it on a smear campaign. Burr and Alexander Hamilton had been political rivals, and apparently after a rude remark from Hamilton at a dinner, Burr challenged him to a duel. Dueling was illegal in New York, and punishable by death, so the two went to New Jersey, at the same location where Hamilton's oldest son died of a duel just three years prior. Sadly, Hamilton lost the duel, and passed away from a fatal gunshot wound just above his hip. After the duel, Burr was charged with murder and fled the state. The years after he avoided New York and New Jersey, until the charges were eventually dropped. In 1833 when he was 77 years old, he married wealthy widow Eliza Jumel, who was 19 years younger than him. After just 4 months of marriage and realizing that her fortune was dwindling, she left Burr, and ironically chose Alexander Hamilton Jr as her divorce lawyer. The day that the divorce was made official, Burr died of a stroke. Check out the Aaron Burr house below.
The Aaron Burr bed & breakfast is the same house that Burr fled to after he shot and killed Alexander Hamilton in the famous duel. Despite the house being upgraded to include air conditioning and television, it is also decorated with antique furniture and decor. The home features a pet friendly room, with a private entrance, so you can bring your furry friends. The home features six bedrooms, all available to stay comfortably in, with a two night minimum. Each room is named after a historical moment in that time. Burr stayed in the Federalist Room located on the second floor, with rumors of his ghost wandering the halls just outside the room. There is also a suite that can accommodate a large family, with multiple rooms, called the Theodosia Suite, after Burr’s first wife.
