Dee Dee Blanchard was the mother of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. The nation was shocked when the news of Dee Dee’s murder was discovered, with her daughter Gypsy Rose responsible for her murder. On June 14, 2015 Sheriff's deputies discovered Dee Dee face down on her bed, in a pool of blood. She had been stabbed several times. At the time of her death, neighbors were concerned that Gypsy Rose had been abducted, due to the fact that she was nowhere to be found. Gypsy was also said to be bound to a wheelchair with multiple medical conditions such as leukemia, asthma, and muscular dystrophy. It was also stated that she had suffered brain damage, leaving her with the mental capacity of a seven year old. It wasn’t until the next day that Gypsy was found in Wisconsin, with her boyfriend that she supposedly met online. When Gypsy was found, it was clear that not only was she not bound to a wheelchair like Dee Dee had claimed, but that she also suffered from none of the conditions or mental impairments also stated by Dee Dee. Doctors explained that Dee Dee possibly suffered from Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA). FDIA is a mental disorder in which a parent or other caretaker exaggerates, fabricates, or induces illness in a person under their care to obtain sympathy or attention. It was also discovered that Dee Dee changed her name shortly after Gypsy was born, and moved away from her family. Her family had suspected that prior to Gypsy’s birth, Dee Dee had also poised her stepmother. They also stated that they have no sympathy for what happened to Dee Dee, and they subsequently flushed her ashes down the toilet after refusing to pay for her funeral. While Dee Dee and Gypsy were living in Missouri, they benefited from multiple charities such as Children's Mercy Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Today, Gypsy Rose is serving a ten year sentence behind bars after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. She is set to be released on December 28, 2023.
