Known as one of America’s most famous parodists, Weird Al Yankovic is a singer, musician, songwriter, actor, accordionist and film/TV producer. His witty comedy songs and entertaining music videos earn him millions of views on YouTube. He also makes money from tours, merchandise sales and licensing deals for films, commercials and TV.
Alfred Matthew Yankovic, born on October 23, 1959, is a California native who started his musical venture at an early age. His parents gave him the choice between playing the guitar and playing the accordion, and he chose the latter instrument. He went on to be the valedictorian of his high school and was a student at State University of California, Polytechnic.
He rose to fame instantly when he gave Dr. Demento a tape of his parody songs, which he played on the show. The kooky radio DJ immediately embraced his creativity and cleverness, and Weird Al’s career was launched into orbit.
Weird Al has released numerous albums of music and countless videos. He has made over 150 parodies of other musicians and artists, including his iconic hits such as “Eat It” (a spoof of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”) and “Amish Paradise” (inspired by Coolio’s song “Gangsta’s Paradise”).
His music and video productions have earned him many awards, including 5 Grammy awards. Yankovic has also directed music videos for other popular artists, such as Ben Folds, Hanson, and the Black Crowes. He is a philanthropist and supports various charities, including the Children’s Cancer Association and American Foundation for Equal Rights.
