BATTLEBOTS: DESTRUCT-A-THON is the one-time, special live event that brings all of the drama, action, and destruction of BattleBots to a theater audience. It features fan-favorite robots like Witch Doctor, Kraken, Mammoth, Whiplash, and Lock-Jaw fighting each other in a fast-paced, 80-minute theater show.
The show is filmed in Lakewood, California. In fact, the entire BattleBots company is based in that city. The shows are filmed in an arena called the 'BattleBox,' which has become famous for its high walls that rise from each side to protect the audience and robots from flying debris.
During a fight, the judges score each robot's performance over three categories: aggression, strategy, and damage. If a robot is determined to be too damaged to compete, it is knocked out. The winner is declared by the judges after a three-minute battle. Generally, each robot has to destroy the other in order to win.
There are some exciting changes to the show this year. For the first time, the teams are allowed to appeal a judge's decision that they disagree with. This will prompt the judge to take a closer look at the case and potentially overturn the original decision. This first came into play in Episode 9 when Malice captain Bunny Liaw appealed the decision against Valkyrie.
The 2023 season of BattleBots is expected to air on Discovery in January. In addition to this, the show will continue to use thermal cameras during a fight, allowing the audience to see what each robot is doing throughout the match. The season will also feature new teams and some returning ones.
