Unlike some of the global teen dramas you might find on Netflix – ahem, 13 Reasons Why and On My Block – Blood and Water is set in Cape Town. Taking place at the fictional Parkhurst College, it portrays the class divide between students from a private school and their public counterparts. As part of the story, 16-year-old Puleng Khumalo is on a mission to track down her long-lost sister, who happens to be the popular swim team star Fikile Bhele.
While the premise of the series may sound like an overly familiar tale, it’s the setting and talent that make this South African production stand out. The show’s director, Nosipho Dumisa, has crafted a coming-of-age mystery that feels both authentic and fresh. The stunning cinematography and picturesque backdrop of the city transport audiences into the world of this young adult thriller.
The attention to detail portrayed in the use of Cape Town’s diverse architectural styles helps viewers to immerse themselves in the show and fully embrace the complexities of its characters. As a result, the show has received positive reviews from critics and audience alike.
During our visit to the Blood and Water set in July 2019, we had the opportunity to meet the show’s Art Director, Chris Joubert. Joubert discussed the importance of establishing character through subtle elements, including the way a person dresses and styles their hair.
