With the final series of Doc Martin on our screens, fans are preparing to say goodbye to the grumpy doctor. Since 2004, ITV have been filming in the small fishing village of Port Isaac on Cornwall’s Atlantic north coast, and the show’s stars like Martin Clunes and Caroline Catz have made many lasting friendships with locals. The real Port Isaac is a picturesque spot with quaint granite cottages and narrow streets that have become iconic over the years. In fact, the villagers themselves have a great relationship with the production team.
In the show, Dr Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes) suffers from hemophobia, which means he is unable to draw blood. As a result, he takes up a position as the only general practitioner in the sleepy Cornish coastal village of Portwenn. He soon finds that the locals have a lot to teach him!
One of the most popular locations in the show is Fern Cottage, which serves as Doc Martin’s home and surgery. It is a beautiful holiday rental that offers sweeping views over Port Isaac and the coastline. You can also visit the nearby church of St Winwaloe, which is a unique building overlooking Gunwalloe Church Cove. It was here that the funeral of Aunt Joan took place in series five.
The village’s iconic pub, The Golden Lion, is where many of the cast and crew would go for a drink after filming. You can also visit Godrevy Lighthouse, which was where the dramatic moment in series nine occurred when the Doc raced to save Mrs Tishell. There is also Delabole Primary School, which featured in all of the school scenes.
