After a breakout turn as writer and star of Booksmart, Olivia Wilde took a left turn for her sophomore film, directing Don't Worry Darling. It's set in the fictional, utopian 1950s town of Victory and stars Florence Pugh and Harry Styles as a couple whose lives begin to fall apart in the planned community, with mysterious cracks showing in its veneer of perfection. But the film's visual feast isn't just about the stars and the on-set drama—it's also a showcase of Palm Springs' iconic architecture, which features in many of the movie's exteriors.
The desert hotspot, just an hour and a half from LA, birthed its own unique branch of modernism called Desert Modernism, defined by clean lines, open-plan living spaces, and bursts of color all sitting surreally in a landscape of desert mountains and palm trees. The movie's utopian town of Victory evokes just that, with the film's houses and buildings all featuring that signature aesthetic framed by a bright blue sky and desert mountains.
The movie primarily was shot in and around Newberry Springs, where many of the houses were built, as well as in Palm Springs itself. But a few key locations were also used, including Troy Dry Lake and The Volcano House. The latter isn't exactly a tourist destination, but it's one of the most eerily picturesque spots in all of California. This mysterious lake is a former body of water that dried up about 25,000-13,800 years ago. Now it's a strange plain on the edge of the Mojave Desert, and it serves as an apt backdrop for the project's headquarters in the fictional town of Victory.
