When the original Fear Factor premiered on NBC in 2001, it was an instant hit. An adaptation of the Dutch show Now or Neverland, the American version was hosted by UFC commentator Joe Rogan and featured some pretty over-the-top stunts that grossed out even the contestants themselves. The contestants competed to win $50,000 by completing a series of challenges, which ranged from eating disgusting foods to laying inside of a cadaver draw in a pitch-black morgue. The show went on to spawn an entire franchise, which now includes TV shows, board games, and even a theme park attraction.
The first series lasted six seasons, and in 2004 Fear Factor became the first network reality show to go into barter syndication (as opposed to regular syndication). NBC eventually sold the show’s local syndication rights to CBS, which airs reruns on Chiller and MTV2. The show has also had a number of different spinoffs, including Fear Factor: Uncensored, in which contestants take the grossness factor to the next level.
In 2017, MTV revived the Fear Factor franchise for a second time, this time with rapper and actor Ludacris as host. The MTV version of the show dropped the “gross” factor but kept the basic format of four teams competing in three stunts to win $50,000. The team that finishes the most stunts in the quickest amount of time wins.
