Despite being billed as an action-packed rom-com about a couple hunting for treasure, Fool's Gold is a surprisingly touching and thoughtful story about the power of love. Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson give electric performances that make it easy to feel for these two mismatched lovers, and the stunning location photography is enough to make this flick worth a watch.
Originally, the film was supposed to shoot in the Caribbean, but the producers changed plans due to concerns over hurricane season. However, a large percentage of the filming was done in Queensland, specifically Hervey Bay, Cairns, Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island, Lizard Island and Brisbane City. Additionally, the movie's yacht scenes and underwater sequences were shot at the City Botanic Gardens on Alice Street in Brisbane.

Most of the underwater and boat scenes for Fool's Gold were filmed in stages 1,3,5,7 and 8 at Village Roadshow Studios on Entertainment Road in Oxenford, Queensland. The main tank and the Stage 5 indoor tank were used for a large number of the submerged scenes. The main tank was specially built for the film and cost the production a lot of money to build.
