The cult classic Hell or High Water was filmed in New Mexico. But did you know that there is a documentary series called Highway Thru Hell that was filmed in the state too? The show follows Jamie Davis and his crew as they rescue vehicles in dangerous situations. The episodes are intense and exciting, with lots of flames. In one episode, the squad is dispatched to a fiery truck crash that involves a tanker truck and a log truck.
Among the filming locations are Route 66 Casino and Hotel in Albuquerque (which stands in for the fictional Blue Ribbon Bar & Grill in the movie). The Caprock Escarpment, which stretches across Eastern New Mexico and West Texas, also features in the series. The town of Hope is particularly evocative, with signs and buildings that look like they come from the dust bowl era.
While the story is certainly campy, the movie does have its moments. Patrick Bergin shines as the satanic mechanic Beezle, who is secretly orchestrating Rachel’s abduction by the Hell Cop. The owner of the roadside tavern, Pop Bartlett, bemoans the decline of morality and values in modern society.
The most memorable scene, however, is the final showdown between Charlie and Satan. The house used to shoot this scene is located in Clovis, New Mexico at 901 Pile Street. It is private property, so fans are advised not to enter the house, and to respect its occupants’ privacy.
