The new film about the saga of Gucci’s founders and their descent into decadence, betrayal and murder stars Lady Gaga and Adam Driver. But while the movie’s opulent family palazzi and apartments (and Gaga’s nothing short of iconic accent) help to elevate the story into a fascinating morality tale, where was it actually filmed?
Milan, the fashion capital of Italy and where Patrizia Reggiani and her husband Maurizio Gucci met and married, plays a key role in the movie. Scenes were shot in the city’s fashion district (Quadrilatero della Moda) and in landmarks like the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Duomo and the Santa Maria in Portico church.
From here, the production travelled to Lake Como, where scenes were filmed in towns such as Lenno and Ossuccio, particularly at Villa Balbiano, an opulent 16th-century palace that was once home to Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio. In a move that was probably inspired by the fact that the real-life Patrizia and Maurizio often visited Switzerland’s St Moritz (which features in the movie as a ski resort), director Ridley Scott also used the village of Gressoney Saint-Jean for party scenes.
Rome, another starring location in the movie, is also home to many luxury label flagship stores and boutiques, including (of course) Gucci itself on Via Condotti. The prestigious shopping avenue was the backdrop of a number of scenes, most notably where Maurizio and Patrizia had tense conversations at a house that reportedly belongs to Princess Mafalda von Hessen, a descendent of both German and Italian royalty.
