When Wednesday Addams takes revenge on her bullies by tossing piranhas into their pool, she’s forced to enroll in the frightful Nevermore Academy—the same boarding school her parents, Morticia and Gomez, attended as children. The creepy facility is surrounded by the small town of Jericho, and many viewers have noticed that the fictional town looks similar to Stars Hollow. But is it a coincidence? In fact, Netflix’s Wednesday was filmed in Romania!
While some scenes in the series were filmed at the real-life Jericho, Vermont, most of the series was shot on set at Bucharest Film Studios (better known as Buftea) in a purpose-built town. The town square, coffee shop, Pilgrim World, and more were built within the studios to give the show a Gothic touch. Meanwhile, those gorgeous shots by the glittering lakes aren’t Lake Champlain—they were filmed at Branesti and Sterbei lakes in the Brasov County region of central Romania!
The actors and crew loved working in the Romanian studio, saying that it was beautiful and the location matched their vision for the show. It was the perfect spot to bring their dark, gothic style to life! And the production team was happy to work with the local people. As a result, the Romanian town is now an important tourist destination and is home to a number of gothic shops that have been opened especially for visitors.
