When it comes to workplace comedies, few are better than NBC’s Superstore. The show follows a group of employees at Cloud 9 — a fictional big-box department store — and is lauded for its witty humor, relatable characters, and insightful commentary on the retail industry. With season four returning Oct. 4, EW takes a look behind the scenes of the Target-esque workplace.
From where is superstore filmed to the tricks that give the show’s sets such a magical feel, the production team goes to great lengths to make the fictional Cloud 9 seem as authentic as possible. From using mirrors to scavenging products from real-life stores that have gone out of business, the crew has pulled off some illusionist-like tricks.
Taking a page from The Office, Superstore follows a group of employees at Cloud 9 Store 1217, a fictional big-box department store. While the show focuses on their daily struggles, many of the workers also find themselves dealing with romance and other personal issues. Some, like Jonah and Amy, are romantically involved while others, such as Dina (Lauren Ash) and Garrett (Colton Dunn), have been flirting for a while.
Part of the secret to Superstore’s success is its deep bench of characters. But the real secret is how it uses those characters to build comedy. Even when the show tackles serious issues, such as its Jonah/Amy romance — which almost rips off The Office’s Jim/Pam romance down to specific story beats — it never feels didactic. One of the best examples is in the break room scenes, which have become something of a trademark for the show and help to keep all the plots in each episode on a collision course.
