The Batman is out now, starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight who stalks Gotham’s streets and strikes fear into criminals. The movie was filmed in various locations including Chicago, USA and London, Liverpool and Glasgow in the UK. A large portion of the filming was done at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire and Cardington Studios in Bedfordshire, but some scenes were shot on location in the cities of London and Liverpool.
In the city of London, many of the main sets were filmed. For example, Central Saint Martins art and design college doubled for the Gotham City Police Department command center and morgue. St George’s Hall in Liverpool also helped to bring Gotham City Hall to life. Meanwhile, Wellington Square was used to film a few establishing shots as well as the exterior of Major Mitchell’s home. Other notable filming locations included the Kingsway Tram Tunnel which was used as the entrance to the Batcave, London’s Printworks nightclub which stood in for Penguin’s Iceberg Lounge and Hartwood Psychiatric Hospital in North Lanarkshire that served as the Gotham Orphanage.
However, much of the filming was done on studio sets that were designed by director James Chinlund. While these set were a significant part of the shoot, visual effects played an important role too. Using LED volume technology, the production team were able to transform real locations into the gritty Gotham City that you see in the film. This included adding shadows, lighting and even a city skyline that was CGI’d in from an image taken at the Marshall Suloway Bridge in downtown Chicago.
