When it comes to Game of Thrones, the show is known for its epic battle scenes and family feuds that get a little too close, but it's also known for bringing viewers to some pretty stunning locations. HBO's prequel, House of Dragons, has taken fans back to Westeros, though this time it's about 200 years before GoT and shows the origins of the Targaryen family. The show has been filmed across Europe, and while most of the interiors were filmed at Leavesden Studios in London, many of the exteriors and some of the most epic locations are actually real places you can visit.
One of the key filming locations for the new series is the Spanish city of Caceres, which was used to represent King's Landing in GoT. The medieval city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its streets and buildings are filled with Roman, Moorish, and Gothic architecture.
The Peak District in England also provided some filming locations for the show. Matt Smith, who plays Prince Daemon Targaryen on the show, was spotted in the region's Cave Dale, Eldon Hill Quarry, and Castleton's Market Place during filming in 2021. The ruins of the Iron Age fort of Caesar's Camp bordering Surrey and Hampshire was also used for House of Dragon's jousting tournament scenes.
On the other side of the continent, Spain's Granada was used to portray the city of Pentos in House of Dragon's pilot episode. The castle of Castillo de la Calahorra and the nearby ruins of the Alhambra were able to convey the palace's rich history in the city, including a time as the capital of North Africa's Kingdom of Granada.
