Where is the Pale Blue Eye Being Filmed?

With the recent release of the gothic thriller The Pale Blue Eye on Netflix, Christian Bale fans have been wondering where it was filmed. This new movie, based on the 2003 eponymous novel by Louis Bayard, takes place in gloomy 1830 as retired detective Augustus Landor investigates a series of murders at West Point with the help of a young military cadet named Edgar Allan Poe.

The majority of the filming for this period piece took place in Pittsburgh and its surrounding areas, with the undeveloped landscape and state parks in southwestern Pennsylvania serving as a stand-in for the actual West Point military academy located in upstate New York. Some of the most notable locations that were used include McConnells Mill State Park (which plays the exterior of a site where occult ceremonies take place), Buttermilk Falls at Moraine State Park, and the Davis Hollow Cabin in Moraine State Park (for interior scenes). In addition, some footage was shot at Point Park University, as well as the Allegheny Cemetery in Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh’s most famous and historic cemetery.

The film’s crew also scouted around the Pittsburgh area to find locations that would match the look of the period story. Some of the most interesting spots that were spotted by the filming crew included Penguin Court at Laughlintown, which was turned into a tavern for the production; and the Compass Inn Museum in Laughlintown, a local historic landmark that was converted into an 1830s-era tavern, according to Uncovering PA.
