When most people think of Wales, they’re likely to think of the dragon that adorns our flag or King Arthur slaying giants on Welsh soil. But for true fans of the 1988 fantasy blockbuster Willow, there’s one thing that will come to mind – and that’s lovable sorcerer Willow Ufgood (played by Warwick Davis). And if you’re a fan of the movie or the new series that’s currently airing on Disney+, then we have some exciting news for you.
As it turns out, some of the filming locations from Willow were actually open to the public and you can visit them yourself! Whether it’s the beautiful ruins of Nockmaar Castle or the breathtaking scenery of Dinorwic Quarry, there are plenty of incredible filming locations that you can visit.
Some of the main scenes from the Willow series were filmed on location in Wales. This included the eerie castle that houses the sorceress Fin Raziel, who was cursed as a brushtail possum by Bavmorda. There were also scenes filmed at the beautiful natural lake on Fin Raziel’s island and at New Zealand’s Tongariro National Park, which is home to Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings.
But the majority of the series was shot in Dragon Studios, located on the outskirts of Bridgend County in Pencoed. Here, a medieval village set was constructed for the production to help it stay true to its fantasy roots. Other ruins, such as the beautiful Blaen y Glyn Uchaf waterfall and Taf Fechan (Owl’s Grove) were also used for some scenes.
