The Young and the Restless, or Y&R as it’s commonly called, has been filmed in Los Angeles, California for over forty years. The soap opera is one of the longest-running dramas on daytime television and it has won a total of 11 Daytime Emmy Awards. The show is centered around the rivalries, romances and hopes of the residents of Genoa City. The storylines and characters have changed throughout the decades, but one constant has been the feud between Jill Abbott and Katherine Chancellor, one of the most famous in soap opera history.
The first episode of Y&R aired on March 26, 1973, and it was originally a half-hour show broadcast five times a week. It expanded to a full hour on February 4, 1980. It was created by Lee Phillip Bell and William J. Bell and based on their belief that American youth had lost their innocence. They named the fictional setting of the show Genoa City, Wisconsin after a town they drove through on their weekend trips from Chicago to Lake Geneva.
Y&R has twice the airtime of other CBS daytime shows, which means that it also requires double the studio space. Its studios are located across from The Price is Right and downstairs from Craig Kilborn’s Late Late Show. The Y&R crew has to constantly shift from set to set, but it seems to flow as though the whole process is choreographed.
