With Valentine’s Day approaching, Netflix’s new rom-com Your Place or Mine is the perfect pick to get us all in the mood. The feel-good film stars Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher as Debbie, a woman who lives in Los Angeles and Peter, who lives in a drop-dead gorgeous Brooklyn home. The couple’s stark contrast in lifestyles makes for a funny yet sweet story of what it means to be best friends. The film was directed by newcomer Aline Brosh McKenna, who previously wrote the screenplay for 27 Dresses and The Devil Wears Prada.
Most of the movie was filmed in New York and Los Angeles, with some scenes shot on sound stages sprinkled with movie magic. 60 Water Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn, is the location for Peter’s apartment. It is a luxury building designed by Leeser Architecture and set across from Empire Stores. The school where Debbie’s son Jack attends is John Muir Middle School in Burbank. The restaurant scene where Peter takes Jack out to eat was filmed at Openaire at 3515 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles.
The film’s main characters are best friends who have opposite energies – she needs routine with her overprotected child and he flourishes in change. During the course of trading places, they help each other figure out what’s truly important in their lives. The result is a heartwarming romance that proves sometimes we need a little change to see the light. Your Place or Mine will premiere on February 10, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
