The first episode of Will Trent, a new crime drama that stars Jay Hernandez and Sonja Sohn as GBI agents Amanda Wagner and Will Trent, is now airing on ABC. Based on Karin Slaughter’s series of novels, the show follows Special Agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations who was abandoned at birth and grew up in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. His skills, including his unique point of view and his dyslexia, have made him the GBI’s top investigator with the highest clearance rate.
The writers of the new series do a good job in quickly establishing both Trent’s point of view and his background as they set up the show’s central case in the first episode. As for the acting, Rodriguez does a solid job of portraying Trent as a man who is stilted in social situations but whose intelligence and dedication to his work are more than evident. It also helps that, unlike many cop shows, Will Trent doesn’t focus on one case per episode; instead, it unfolds like a visual book-turner, allowing viewers to learn more and more each time they watch.
The show was largely filmed in Metro Atlanta, though some scenes were shot in California as well. For example, the scene where Trent and Amanda arrive at a murder scene at Lake Lanier, about an hour northeast of Atlanta, was shot in a studio in Gwinnett County’s Eagle Rock Studios. The same studio is where the episodes in which Will Trent and Faith go on a hunt for a criminal were filmed.
